My current flexi-rigid design: Head section (rigid L1-6), Neck section (flexible L2-5), Body section (rigid L1-6), Tail section (flexible L4-5) with exposed contacts (J1) on L4 for insertion into a ZIF socket.
I've created J1 as a component but can't place it on an inner layer i.e. L4.
Can components be placed on inner layers? Is this handled a different way?
Thanks in advance for your help.
I will take a stab at this. The quick and dirty way is, after the part is placed just modify the padstacks for the ZIF connector and put them on L4. Works for us! At this point it doesn't much matter that the place bounds and assembly top, etc. are still on the top. The important thing is that the pads come out on the correct artwork layer.
In reply to Boma:
I deleted the connector from the schematic and placed shapes as pads on L4 and SolderMask, our PCB manufacturer seemed happy with the Gerbers from this. However I think I prefer Boma's solution.
