problems opening STEP file in solidworks

I am trying to open a PCB STEP file in Solidworks 2012 SP05. I am running SPB 16.6 so15 latest hotfix.

When I export from allegro in AP-203, Solidworks tells me "The file being read in is not a AP203 or AP214 file. Do you wish to continue?" I select yes...Solidworks crashes.

When I export from allegro in AP214, Solidworks proceeds to open the file with no warnings.....and then crashes.

When I export from allegro in AP242, Solidworks tells me "The file being read in is not a AP203 or AP214 file. Do you wish to continue?" I select yes...Solidworks crashes. Solidworks 2012 SP05 doesn't appear to recognize the AP242 format in the list of FILE>OPEN options.

Anyone else having these issues? Could this be an issue with my computer?

FYI, I am on the hairy low edge of even being able to do any 3-D modeling. Video card has 256mb memory, XP 32bit system, 2gb ram.

 

  • Is there noone else that has Allegro and Solidworks that can confirm/deny this is a problem? I'm not getting much help from Cadence Support.

  • You are not alone.  Although we do not use Solidworks here, I have an ex-colleague that does, that has run in to the same issue as you.  We use ProE here at my work and it has a different issue.  I can import the STEP into ProE, but all the parts are stacked at the board origin.

    I think maybe Cadence is still working out the kinks in this yet (my opinion of course). 

  • I don't have any answers for you as yet but just wanted to let you know I will be doing some testing starting in mid October. We use both ProE and SolidWorks so I will test both tools. Hopefully some of these issues will be fixed by then.

  • I have seen this when the resulting STEP file has non-uniform units. For example, STEP files assocaited with library parts are specified in Metric units while the board is designed in English units.

    It seems that both PTC and Solidworks assume that all sections in the composite STEP file are based upon uniform units.

  • I have changed all units to uniform level i.e. milimeters and again I tried to import generated step file from allegro into PTC and facing the same problem, all my 3D models are stacked outside the board.

    So what should I do??? 

    Please replay ASAP...
