Xilinx is making a shift from being a silicon provider to a platform provider, according to David Tokic, director of partner ecosystem alliances at Xilinx. As such, the company is increasingly relying on a broad ecosystem that includes silicon IP, EDA, and services. In a video interview at the recent Design Automation Conference (DAC) conducted at the ChipEstimate.com booth, I asked Tokic what the IP ecosystem includes, what types of IP are most commonly used, what challenges customers have with IP integration, and what IP Xilinx provides directly as opposed to working with third parties.
If you think of Xilinx as an "FPGA" company, you may need to broaden your view. Tokic explained that Xilinx provides not only silicon, but targeted design platforms as well. These include base platforms for general logic development, platforms targeting specific technologies such as DSP and embedded, and application-specific platforms in such areas as automotive, broadcasting, and wireless and wired communications. Such platforms require a lot of IP.
