Have you ever been looking for a
command, an option or an attribute in RTL Compiler but you can't quite remember
the name? Or maybe you are looking for commands or attributes for a specific
function. Well, the solution in both cases is the apropos command. Yes,
RC has a command similar to the useful UNIX utility. The apropos command
returns a list of commands and options that have the specified search string in
the name, options or even in the help strings. Try entering ‘apropos phys'
at the RC prompt to see all the physical related commands and attributes. Do ‘apropos
enc_' to see a list of the various attributes that provide control over the
automatic Silicon Virtual Prototype generation that is done during ‘synthesize
The apropos command is just one
of many ways to get help in RC. The help command return a list of all
the commands or the detailed usage for a specific command. All commands also
support the -help option. The -help option is especially useful
with attributes. Do ‘get_attribute -help enc_ root' to see usage
information for all the SVP controls. Wildcards are supported so you can do
something like ‘get_attribute -help dft *' to get the DFT attributes of
all the various object types or ‘get_attr -help * design'' to get all
the attributes on a design. There is also the ‘man' command for getting
more information about commands, attributes or even messages. Give a try to ‘man
remove_assigns' or ‘man TUI-66' next time you are running RC. And of
course, there is always that old standby, the TCL ‘info commands'
