The vast majority of SoCs today are advanced mixed-signal designs. The old mixed-signal world looked like an analog environment on the left bolted to a digital environment on the right. Depending on which engineering group was responsible for final assembly, one part would be treated as a black box and the two parts would be bolted together at the system-on-chip (SoC) level. But today's mixed-signal designs have multiple feedback loops, complex modeling requirements, and higher performance targets. This means it's no longer possible to deconstruct designs into separate analog and digital functions. Engineers must embrace the digital-centric metric-driven verification methodologies into their mixed-signal verification (MSV) flows. Engineers also need an integrated MSV environment that focuses on performance and reliability. Top-level SoC verification has become a critical challenge-and functional failures can result in costly design iterations and missed market windows.
Success demands that tool, methodologies, and design teams rethink and break out of traditional silos in various functional and technology disciplines, and collaborates across the design chain and ecosystem. Cadence has had the opportunity to team with the world's top semiconductor companies and ecosystem partners on every significant mixed-signal design over the past 25 years, and has thus evolved its MSV solutions to address this demand. Mixed-signal simulators and environments such as Cadence's Virtuoso® AMS Designer Simulator and Incisive® simulators have evolved to support true mixed-signal simulations.
Furthermore, by interfacing the Virtuoso and Encounter platforms through the industry-standard OpenAccess (OA) database, Cadence has also enabled a new generation of interoperable mixed-signal flows and methodologies that help analog and digital design teams efficiently implement complex mixed-signal designs. This has resulted in fewer iterations and communication errors between design teams, especially during floorplanning, chip integration, and engineering change order (ECO) processes.
