The SPB16.3 Allegro PCB Editor has a new 3D Viewer!
Viewing a 3D rendering of the Allegro design is now available with the 3d_viewer (View — 3D View) command. The 3D Viewer is invoked in a separate window which includes viewing filters; choice of solid, wire frame or transparent graphics; and controls to pan, zoom, and spin the display.
The 3D viewer also operates in pre-selection mode. This mode makes it possible to display HDI via structures.
Multiple windows can be opened and each window supports a function to export a .jpg bitmap file.The 3D viewer is available in Allegro PCB L and up and requires OpenGL to be enabled.Visit the Allegro Product pages and watch a movie of all the capabilities!

Hi Donglin - I would recommend that you contact our Customer Support team and ask to work with an Allegro PCB Editor expert. I "think" there may be a method to read the Step files you mention, but I'd like one of our expert AEs to discuss this with you. Thanks! Jerry G.
Why does Allegro use this proprietary format 3Di instead of the far better and generic .Step files? There are many 3d models drawn in the standard and this also provides a much more realistic view of the PCB assembly.
Why use a mechanical CAD package that is outside the core programs when other simpler CAD packages do this function with ease (EasyPC and Altium for examples).
The 3D viewer just gives a 3D view of the design as displayed in Allegro. I'm not sure about what you're asking. It might be best to contact Cadence Customer Support - http://support.cadence.com

what setup is required?
The 3D view is based on the height property values set on the component's Place Bound shape. That controls what you'll see in the 3D view.

The 3D model's height, width, and length dimensions are tracked in Allegro PCB Editor. We don't include exact 3D images/pictures of each component. You can use a mechanical CAD product (e.g. ProE) to see exact model images.
Good new, but is it possible to include real manufacturer 3d model of the component intead of a rectangle?
I've not seen issues with the screen refresh, but it could be design dependent. Feel free to Email me or open a new Customer Support Service Request so that we can examine your scenario.
While this feature is nice, the screen refresh time is so long it makes it practically useless.
