As part of my final project in Micro electronic devices, i would like to open a GDS file in virtuoso . I was trying to do the following steps:
1. create new library
2. in that library - File->import->Stream
In the end of that process I couldnt find any new layout to open.
Does anyone has an idea?
when the Stream import dialog opens Fill it in as:
Stream file: your .GDS file
Library: Your new library you created which will hold imported design
Top Level Cell: exact name of top level cell as it was designed prior to export to GDS file
Leave everything else blank. (do not attach technology library) It should work.
In reply to Kabal:
But let me be more specified. the gds file was created in The layout editor program and this file is a converted .dxf file that was created in Aoutocad 2013. The oroginal dxf file was constracted from a different layers but no cells...
So after the long introduction I am not quite sure that I get right what should I fill in the "Top level cell" tab.
Thanks in advanced
In reply to Graphene1:
Leave the Top Cell blank - it's not necessary to fill this in. If you don't specify it, it will import every structure (cell) from the file.
In reply to Andrew Beckett:
I left the top level cell tab blank as you said but I'm keep getting this error:
Targert library 'Graphene' is attached to the technology library 'cdsDefTechLib'. Therefore technology file is opened in read-only mode. Use a layer map file to continue.
What is the 'layer map file' ????
When you first created a library, it contained no real technology information. (It was attached to a default library). This is the problem.
I think you will see more information if you import the GDS2 file with the option "Generate Technology Information From Stream File" checked.
This will automatically generate a new technology library for you.
The layer map file is used to map the gds layer numbers to real layer names in your technology library.
From your description, I don't think you have a correct technology library set up. So you will not see anything
In reply to ColinSutlieff:
We do have a little progress. I checked the "Generate Technology Information From Stream File" box and the traslation was completed successfully with either no warnings or errors.
But..... the destination folder where the imported file needs to apear on, is still empty...
what did go wrong?
There should be a log file generated when you stream in - did you look at that to see what it did? It should tell you what it actually did - what cells it found, what was created and so on.
In the log file that was generated all the fielleds are '0'....
I guess that mean that nothing was created.
I think you mean library instead of "destination folder". No?
If I follow you correctly, I believe you now have a technology library.
If you re-read the GDS2, but this time turn off the "Generate Technology Information From Stream File" checkbox
Enter the stream file again, type a new name into which the design data should be read, and finally click on the "attach technology library" pull-down. You should see a list of valid libraries. Select the library that you created in the first run.
I hope that should do it.
In the "stream file" section, type in the name of the gds file
In the "Library" section, type in the new name of a library. This library name will be created by the translator.
For example, enter "mydesign". This field is a drop-down list but you can also enter text directly.
In the "attach Technology Library" field, click on the drop-down box and select the library that you created earlier (you said that this was successful).
If everything is set up correctly, after translation you will see a library called "mydesign".
"Mydesign" will contain the results of the translation The library will be attched to the technology library that you created earlier.
There should also be default layer colors defined so that when you open the layout viewsyou see colorful layout. If everything is yellow something has gone wrong.
Hope this helps
After importing the GDS file into virtuoso, I have not any error or warning, but two major problems:-> After displaying layout in the virtuoso, metal 1 is not displayed and all contacts with the metal1 layer do not appear in my imported layout.-> After the lvs, I receive a lot of warnings informing me that the transistors are not recognized.Does any one have any explanation? I really need your help please!
In reply to PhD Electronic:
Something went wrong, presumably!
Not enough info to go on - presumably the source data either didn't contain all the data, or the data was mapped onto the wrong Virtuoso layers.
This thread seems to have become a dumping ground for random unrelated stream import issues...
Here's what I've done:
I created a counter in schematic virtuoso, after that I created its symbol.
Whith ENCOUNTER i generated its layout, I routed it but I clould not do Timing delay I don't know why?
After I saved in gds file: Map File=> streamOut.map; Library Name=> DesigneLib; I checked "Uniquify Cell Names" and "White abstract information for LEF Macros"
To import it: file- import- stream then I just checked "Generate Technology Information From Stream File" then apply
Then here I have not any error or warning !
The problem then, is the fact that the layout isn't imported correctly since the metal1 and all the connections made of metal1 aren't displayed (or not imported).
In addition to that, while running the lvs, I obtain a lot of warnings informing me that all my transistors aren't recognized.
I don't know if I need to detail more ? that's exactly all what I did ! Can you please have any explanation.
Thanks for your patience!
