PCB Editor 17.4 INCREDIBLY SLOW, 17.2 OK

Hi there,

I just get newer version of OrCAD PCB Designer - 17.4 instead of 17.2 (due to reinstalling my laptop - W10 crashed, reinstalled to 22H2 from previous 21H2). Version 17.2 was fine, without any signs of high system load, but in version 17.4 it seems that there is some problem with graphical interface - when I slide with cursor over the objects on the board, normally in 17.2 every object will highlight and de-highlight immediatelly with cursor current position, but in 17.4 it does not - there is a delay about half second, which is annoying and makes PCB Designer more or less unusable.. What's more, the power usage on CPU (w integrated graphics - i5 8265U, 8G of RAM) rises up to 100% percent. Does anyone know how to fix this issue?

Thanks for response!

Are you using Windows 10 version 22H2 or Windows 11 version 22H2?

The Win 11 update has major issues with Nvidia devices...

Disable opengl which minimizes graphics usage. Recommended by cadence is to have an external graphics of min 2GB. Also make sure you meet minimum specs requirement for 17.4

I am using W10 22H2 version. I tried to disable OpenGL in PCB editor, so after app restart the transparency in design disappeared, but slowness with objects highlighting under moving cursor still persists. One interesting point - this slowness is not affected with design complexity at all - it happens in the same way on board with two components or on board with two thousand components, so I think this does not have any to do directly with graphics card hardware. And I don't think that something really special, big and power-consuming happened between 17.2 to 17.4 designer version.

The issue is the pcb editor, not the version of windows you are using nor OpenGl. Years back I had posted about this. So some background. The most like version of 17.4 to 17.2 for graphics speed is any version of 17.4 up to service pack 8. When service pack 8 was introduced it came with some new features. One of them was Dark Theme as up until that point the pcb editor did not have it but it did have the modern icons. In the versions up to service pack 8 there is no delay in highlighting any object. It works just like in 17.2.

If you look back at prior posts one user indicated that the way the highlighting in 17.4 works was actually a feature as indicated by their German Var as I recall. This so called feature appeared out of "No-Where" there was no mention of it in any CCR.

It has been some time since 17.4 was released and the lack of speed in highlighting any object remains. There is no fix to this in any service pack other than mentioned above.

Thanks a lot! So we decided to downgrade to SP7 of PCB Designer 17.4 and problem disappeares - this OrCAD version has fast highlighting response with moving cursor. You saved my psychical health condition, in the future we will see, if CADENCE will f* back this ELEMENTARY functionality.
