Poland is a country with long tradition in microelectronics education and research. During the time of Iron Curtain when the universities were controlled by the government, the AGH University in Cracow was responsible for building microelectronic circuits for nuclear and X-ray research, nowadays they are using this knowledge for cooperation with foreign companies. Cadence has acquired 2013 Polish company Evatronix, since then we have three offices in Poland, which are continuing IP development. The IP business is evolving, new positions get created, therefore Cadence is highly interested in keeping contact with Polish universities in order to get best talents from the universities first as an intern and then at a permanent position.
Currently three Polish universities are contributors to Cadence Academic Network.
AGH University of Science and Technology in Cracow
At AGH Cadence Academic Network is collaborating with two faculties: Faculty of Physics and Applied Computer Science (FPACS) and Department of Measurement and Instrumentation (DMI). While FPACS has a great reputation for building sensors for particle physics experiments, their chips are used by CERN, DESY, FAIR accelerators, DMI is concentrating on X-ray sensors. Both areas require great knowledge of Mixed-Signal methodology, since more and more channels are squeezed on a chip in order to increase the resolution. Also low-power technics are important, since one of the main challenges in large detectors like ATLAS in CERN is to provide enough power to the thousands of sensor chips and also to cool them. Both teams have multiple tapeouts a year in 65-130nm technologies.
Faculty of Electronics, Telecommunications and Informatics in Gdansk
The Politechnica Gdanska has certified lab for digital and analog Cadence Design Flows. Professor Marek Wójcikowski tells in the video, how the university is benefiting from being certified.
The Department of Microelectronic Systems does research in various areas, e.g. in developing a sensor network for city traffic monitoring. The ASIC has been manufactured in UMC 130nm.
Department of Microelectronics and Computer Science in Łódź
The Department of Microelectronics and Computer Science (DMCS), headed by Prof. Andrzej Napieralski, was founded in May 1996. The members of the department staff give lectures and run laboratory courses at the Faculty of Electrical, Electronic, Computer and Control Engineering and the International Faculty of Engineering, in Polish, French, and English. The Department cooperates with a wide range of research organizations and academia from all round the world. This international cooperation is constantly strengthened thanks to the MIXDES conference which is organized by DMCS annually starting from 1994. Usually MIXDES is organized in most beautiful places in Poland, but since DMCS was celebrating its 20th birthday this year MIXDES was in Łódź. Cadence sponsored the conference and a presentation was given in vendor session.
