Academic and Entrepreneur Tracks at CadenceLIVE Europe 2023

18 Sep 2023 • 3 minute read

I am very happy to announce that registration for the in-person CadenceLIVE Europe user conference has opened! The conference will be hosted in Munich at a new venue, the Holiday Inn, from October 10 to 11.

In the very unlikely case that you have some free time during CadenceLIVE, the famous Deutsche Museum, officially the largest science and technology museum in the world, is just a short walk away. However, just the academic track alone offers two whole days of programming.

Continuing the tradition, Europractice is opening the track with updates on its academic offerings. After that presentation, yet another tradition will be continued, the new Lead Institution Professor will do an invited presentation. This year, the new member of this exclusive club is Professor Francesco Fornetti from the University of Bristol. Professor Fornetti is known as the academic evangelist for AWR software products, and he has his own channel on YouTube where he explains how AWR software can be used to cover almost all aspects of microelectronics education, not just RF!

The next presentation will announce the SkyWater130 PDK for Cadence tools. Soumyajit Sinha will explain how the contents of this PDK were created based on the released technology data by the SkyWater foundry. It can be accessed by academia without signing NDAs, making it incredibly useful for student education. Soumyajit is porting the VLSI Foundations Education Kit to this PDK so that a stripped-down version of an Arm processor, described in Harris&Harris “Digital Design and Computer Architecture,” will be available in SkyWater130.

Reutlingen University is always present at CadenceLIVE with excellent presentations. This time, Yannick Uhlmann will present a paper on “Integration of Spectre Simulation into a Machine Learning Pipeline for Modeling Analog Circuits,” a very hot topic for both academia and industry.

Aristotle University of Thessaloniki is a long-time Cadence partner—at least a dozen graduates from this university are working at Cadence, which underlines the quality of teaching there. Aristotelis Tsekouras will present “Design of Floating-Point Multiplier and Multiply and Accumulate Components,” where he will describe how Cadence tools like Genus Synthesis Solution, Jasper Formal Verification Platform, and Joules RTL Power Solution were used to design MACs, which are important parts of a machine learning accelerator.

The winner of the IoT RF contest, Jamie Gui, from Ramon Llull University in Barcelona will present “Design of IoT Devices Embedding Virtual Antenna with Cadence AWR Software” in the RF and RF Systems Design track.

We’re hosting our evening event at the famous Paulaner Brewery nearby on October 10! While Oktoberfest will be one month earlier at Theresienwiese, Paulaner Brewery is famous for its strong beer festival in early Spring. Join us at the evening event to find out why strong beer is popular in Spring. Wink

The second day starts with the presentations from our sponsored student teams. Téchnico Solar Boat team from Portugal will explain how they have used Fidelity CFD Software from Cadence to optimize the hydrofoils and marine propellers of their boat, and Team Bath Racing Electric from the UK will describe how they used Celsius Thermal Solver to protect their car accumulator during the race.

After a short break, it is time for the Entrepreneur Track! Promising startups using Cadence software to implement their prototypes will report about their plans, their products, and how they want to change the world. OQmented from Germany is creating AR-glasses for the multiverse, Implatronic from Germany is implanting sensors into cancer for monitoring and verifying the effectiveness of therapy treatments, and VOCsens from Belgium has a sensor that detects different gases.

Every year, the Cadence Academic Network calls for the best Master Thesis Award and this year, we have two winners: Till Moldenhauer from Reutlingen University with his thesis, “Survey, Application and Evaluation of ML Algorithms in Automated Analog Circuits” and Dominik Hiltbrunner from FHNW in Switzerland with his thesis “Design and Analysis of a Finite-Impulse-Response Digital-to-Analog Converter." Congratulations again to the winners of this year’s contest.

We’re saving the best for last! ChatGPT and other generative AI systems are all the rage nowadays and, of course, EDA is joining this megatrend. In the panel discussion, representatives from academia and industry will discuss with moderator Rosa Markarian “How Does EDA Benefit from the AI Revolution.” An exciting announcement will happen during the discussion, a secret until then, we can’t wait to tell you more!

The Academic Track at CadenceLIVE Europe is the place where academia meets industry, where connections are made, and discussions are started. Don’t miss this exciting event!
