Besides resistance, seakeeping, and propulsion, wind loads play an important role in navigation, and wind studies form an essential part of marine engineers and naval architects' work. Since model tests are expensive and wind tunnel availabilities don't always match project deadlines, CFD simulations become a powerful tool, allowing designers to understand the effects of design changes on their projects quickly and accurately.

In addition to calculating the effect of the wind on navigation, for example in the open sea and in harbors, it can be important for other aspects to be accurately predicted, such as simulating various wind angles with a certain velocity profile or anticipating smoke evacuation for the evaluation of passenger (dis)comfort.

CFD Simulation of Ship Smoke Evacuation

Damen Shipyards and Cadence develop a CFD wind study methodology to replace expensive experimentation and tunnel testing.

An interesting example customer case on this subject is the wind study Damen Shipyards conducted on the DAMEN FCS3307 design: a quite slender vessel for which they needed to prove it has sufficient transversal stability to resist over-rolling in severe side winds. To reduce the cost of proving compliance with IMO safety regulations DAMEN, in partnership with its CFD code supplier NUMECA International (now Cadence), developed a CFD methodology that can replace expensive experimentation and wind tunnel testing.

In this on-demand webinar, we present all possible numerical aspects dedicated to wind studies for marine engineering and show you industry examples and best practices that can bring naval designs to a new level.

Besides being the tool of choice for hydrodynamics simulation, learn about the benefits Cadence's Marine CFD software, in combination with best in class unstructured mesher Hexpress, offers for performing wind studies accurately, fast, and at a significantly reduced cost.
