Aircraft that operate from ships at sea must navigate the turbulent airwake environment surrounding the ship in a variety of atmospheric and sea states that can make these operations challenging and risky for pilots. It is important to understand the airwake dynamics of ships in these varied conditions to develop accurate flight simulation models for pilot training and help determine the safe flight envelopes that can be operated within. Towards this goal, CRAFT Tech has been using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to study the turbulent ship airwake environment and develop flight simulation models that can accurately capture these effects on aircraft.
