Why GKN Aerospace Chose Fidelity Automesh

6 Mar 2023 • 1 minute read

GKN Aerospace

Below are a few words from GKN Aerospace about the Cadence Fidelity Automesh tool, their preferred meshing tool for turbomachinery applications.

Business Challenges

"As a key player in the aerospace market, at GKN Aerospace, we need to be very demanding regarding the capabilities of the tools we use. In the current fast-paced CFD world, our engineers need a robust and quick mesh generator, capable of accurately capturing our complex turbomachinery geometries."

Benefits of Using Fidelity Automesh

"Ever since we started using Fidelity Automesh, we were able to divide our meshing time by five, allowing us to spend more time on post-processing and solving our real challenges,"  says an employee from the GKN Aerospace Engine Systems in Sweden.

"My colleagues using a competitor's meshing tool can't keep pace with us! In fact, my colleagues are now interested in Cadence Fidelity Automesh tool. So we have organized an internal training for them. From this training, we expect them to grasp the meshing technology and apply the Automesh tool to an even larger set of our applications."

The mesh quality metric, i.e., minimum skewness and the mesh generation time for each part, are tabulated.

"With Fidelity Automesh, a high-quality periodic matching mesh around multiple blade rows can be generated in a few hours. The row-wizard automatically sets up a different topology for each type of machine configuration (axial compressor, axial turbine, centrifugal impeller, etc.), providing us a huge time gain."

"We are investigating many advanced features, such as cavities using the ZR effects, fillets on the hub, snubber with fillets, partial tip gaps, etc., enhancing the possibility of including them automatically and easily in the final mesh. This meshing technology allows us to capture the flow's topology more accurately. In short, it saves time and increases the accuracy of our CFD simulations."

Fillets can be imported from a CAD model or directly created within the Automesh interface (left). Non-axisymmetric and partial tip gaps (in black) can be created on the hub and shroud of a blade (right).
