Introduction to Flashpoint Automatic Volume Meshing in Pointwise

24 Nov 2021 • 2 minute read

The need for automatic mesh generation has never been clearer. The CFD Vision 2030 Study called most applied CFD “onerous” and cited meshing’s inability to generate complex meshes on the first attempt a roadblock. That’s where the Flashpoint suite of automation features in Cadence Pointwise Meshing was born.

In Pointwise V18.5, we introduce Flashpoint Automatic Volume Meshing. Like its predecessor in V18.4, Flashpoint Automatic Surface Meshing, the goal is to generate a suitable volume mesh given a minimum of goal-oriented parameters. Furthermore, Pointwise’s decades of meshing best practices are built-in to Flashpoint’s logic, resulting in a mesh that’s ready for CFD with little to no further tweaking.

Today we are posting a series of videos describing how you can apply Flashpoint Automatic Volume Meshing (AVM) within your CFD process.

AVM: An Overview — Automatic Volume Meshing is one of the hallmark new features in Pointwise Version 18.5. Often a time-intensive process, we've created an automated procedure with a user-friendly interface that uses our best practices to produce high-quality volume meshes in very little time. This video is an overview of the entire process, giving you a glimpse at how quickly and easily it is now to produce a high-quality volume grid. https://youtu.be/552-U5ehLjQ

AVM: GLOBAL TAB, PART 1 — This video marks the beginning of an introduction to the Global tab, which contains several options for defining the farfield. Among them are grid type, shape type, and uniform sizing of the extents of the volume grid. https://youtu.be/Z6sPp9q7EFE

AVM: GLOBAL TAB, PART 2 — This video marks the conclusion of an introduction to the Global tab by going over the options available for defining the boundary layer. These include settings for wall normal spacing and growth rate. https://youtu.be/SerXyN3Ph3I

AVM: BOUNDARIES TAB, PART 1 — This video marks the beginning of an introduction to the Boundaries tab, which contains the ability to assign various boundary parameters to the volume grid. In particular, this video covers the default boundary conditions that Automatic Volume Mesh uses to automatically classify the boundaries. https://youtu.be/oe59MnHGgGc

AVM: BOUNDARIES TAB, PART 2 — This video marks the conclusion of an introduction to the Boundaries tab and covers how to create user-specified boundary conditions using name pattern matching. https://youtu.be/SerXyN3Ph3I

AVM: ADVANCED TAB — This video discusses the Advanced tab, which contains a lot of the parameters that the user is likely to never have to change, such as how symmetry planes are handled in addition to Decay and Background Spacing factors. https://youtu.be/HwkLIftIuQk
