austriamicrosystems is an analog IDM that designs and manufactures ICs for applications such as power management, sensors, and sensor interfaces. But the company is not purely "analog." Most of its analog ICs have small amounts of digital control or bus interface logic, said Thomas Moerth, manager of design support at austriamicrosystems. Even though this digital logic may be only 10K-50K gates, it creates challenges such as finding the right speed/accuracy tradeoffs for top-level simulation.
Another challenge is data transfer between the analog and digital design environments. In the following video interview, conducted at the recent Design Automation Conference (DAC), Moerth talks about a recent mixed-signal sensor project in which a customer provided the digital RTL netlist. The OpenAccess database provided communication between the Virtuoso 6.1 and Encounter Digital Implementation environments, with no need for LEF/DEF data transfers. The video interview provides more insights into the benefits of a common database and its implications for floorplanning, pin adjustments, and other tasks.
Does austriamicrosystems plan to use OpenAccess for future mixed-signal design work? "Definitely," Moerth concluded.
