Training Insights New Course: Planar EM Simulation in AWR Microwave Office

30 Oct 2023 • 1 minute read

This two-day course is an in-depth training on AXIEM, the planar EM solver used in Microwave Office, the design environment for RF and microwave engineers. AXIEM is the preferred EM tool to use when the layout is planar as is typically the case for MMIC chips, RF boards, and layered modules.

The course emphasizes concepts that are critical to creating successful, efficient simulations with accurate results. Specific topics include:

  • Advanced Planar EM Layout
    • Implement Shape Modifiers and pCells in Layout.
    • Configure Shape simplification rules to simplify layout for more manageable EM simulation.
  • Configuring the Ports in AXIEM
    • Set the ground definition of the port correctly for the most accurate answer.
    • Create differential and grouped ports to solve grounding issues.
    • Control port de-embedding and calibration options.
  • Meshing, Frequency Control, and Simulation Options
    • Create a reasonable mesh for speed and accuracy.
    • Configure the EM solver for optimal performance.
  • EM Extraction
    • Explore advanced EM Extraction options for hierarchical layout.
    • Extend the extraction flow with “static” and “dynamic” use models.
  • Planar Antenna Simulations
    • Control antenna patterns in 2D plots and 3D visualization.
    • Discover the in-situ simulation paradigm, where the antenna’s performance is coupled to a driving circuit.
