Function that returns the number of items in a list

For example, I have a list pathMetals = '("METAL1" "METAL2" "METAL3" "METAL4" "METAL5")

What function do i use that says "You have 5 metals"?

numMetals = length(pathMetals)
printf("You have %d metals\n" numMetals)
