Pad Editor: What is the Purpose & Difference Between Mechanical Hole, Tooling Hole, and Mounting Hole.

I am using OrCAD 17.2.

My original question was:

I am wanting to make some non plated through holes for mounting a PCB into an enclosure. I only see people giving advice about using basically the mechanical hole but set it to non-plated. That is fine to do but what is the difference between the pad types mentioned in the title? I would imagine that the mounting hole should be used but is there a significant difference?

Now I have to wonder what is their purpose? I tried to make a mounting hole type padstack by just using the drill diameter: 156mils and set it to non-plated and drill symbol to Type: circle, Characters: MH and Drill Figure Diameter: 156mils. Everything else is default. I get a warning: No default internal pads are defined.  When loaded into a design, no internal pads will be added for unmatched padstack layers or when additional internal connection layers are added to the design. and error: No pads defined.  At least one pad must be defined. How are these supposed to be used? And if you need to define a pad, why? these are mounting holes.

This doesn't explain it very well (IMHO), but it might be helpful to you.

Reading the support article, I read it like this:

Mechanical hole would be something you might mount a mechanical part into.

The mounting hole would be a hole you'd use to mount the board to something (a fixture maybe?)

The tooling hole is simply that.

I've only needed the typical 'mounting hole' so far. Good day.
