Creating a BOM with LibreOffice Calc versus MS Office Excel!!!

I know one can create an Excel-like spreadsheet bill of materials (BOM) importing the tab or CSV delimited ASCII BOM file from Allegro Capture (OrCAD Capture) to a get your standard BOM document, but what if you use LibreOffice or OpenOffice type office applications, is there a way to get Allegro or OrCAD Capture to automatically open in LibreOffice Calc when one checks "open in Excel" check mark to create the BOM?  Assume SPB 17.20.060 and the latest LibreOffice (version 6.3.2).

(Sorry, forgot to circle back and expand on this.)

You will need a standalone Windows Excel license to export a BOM.  Scripting in Excel can do interesting things including SQL calls (shudder), so we're stuck with it.

Standalone Excel can be obtained in the US for around $140.

In short, the primary advantage to exporting to Excel:  CIS BOMs can include information that is not cached in the schematic and is obtained by SQL query.  I.E.  Not sure why you would cache the component description but it would be nice to include it on the BOM, live from the SQL data source.

Love or Hate Microsoft, in the end, Standalone Excel is not wildly expensive.  And, the SAX scripting environment in office products could be useful someday.

If it helps, I consider Project and Powerpoint as evil.
