Capture / Allegro V17.4 Issues

Kenneth Wood
Kenneth Wood over 4 years ago

Hi all, I would like to get a thread going for people using V17.4 in order to discuss issues with the software.

I'm seeing quite a few bugs / issues with V17.4 Capture and Allegro. I've submitted multiple CCR's, some minor issues have been addressed but other ones have not.

For ex. How many of you are seeing a blinking in Capture when double clicking text or labels? How many of you use dual monitors and have a mouse wheel pan issue in Allegro when Allegro is on monitor 2?

I have videos of my issues and will make more soon.

Please reply with software issues you are seeing, not enhancements but real issues that weren't there in V17.2

Regards

Ken

Zoom out and you'll see the shape lag becomes more pronounced.

I have the same symbol highlight phenomenon you have...but I'd be willing to bet that is by design as to not slow down the system with mega-highlights if someone is zoomed out on a large board and just swinging the cursor around...probably a delay they added...maybe anyways.

That highlighting issue applies to everything in 17.4. The full screen cursor and the shapes graphics issues all point to OpenGL as far as I can tell. Something is really wrong with this. I mean 17.2 is fine so there must have been a change to 17.4 that has really hammered the graphics speed on windows 10. BTW it is the same on Winserver 2012, 2019 too so not limited to windows 10.

For the moment I think 17.2 is probably my best option. 17.4 has the new Icons and it looks a bit like competitors products but you know what, honestly if the graphics speed is not there you flat out do not have a viable cad system IMHO. The PCB editor has always been fast as in blazing fast for many many years so I am kind of scratching my head like what on earth has happened.

Anyway hopefully Cadence can resolve these issues & I am sure they will.

Thanks for checking the highlighting at that end. If you want to see a horror movie, turn on the full screen cursor and try the shape operations with it Slight smile

    All the best.

I took a look at V17.2 and you are right, the highlighting is pretty much instantaneous unlike V17.4

So here is a funny turn of events...now keep in mind that I've been told by Cadence that I'm pretty much the only Cadence owner using dual 4k monitors and I'm the only Cadence owner having the blinking issue (along with a few others issues) and that Cadence is not seeing what I'm seeing. Well lookie here, one day after I create this post (which shows other users seeing my issues) I get an email from Cadence saying that my "Blinking" CCR's (I submitted 4 over the last year and a half ) will be addressed in V17.4 HF17. Now before I get too excited I 'll remember previous issues that were supposedly addressed in a hotfix that really didn't resolve the issue entirely...we shall see.

Well that's good they did reach out to you. They well may have not seen the 4k issue because they don't have 4k monitors available, who knows.

I was talking to a friend last night that uses Allegro, he mentioned to me that they tried out 17.4  last year but due to the graphics issues they decided not to use it or deploy it until it became more stable.
He indicated that he saw the exact same issues I reported here and the ones you pointed out with respect to shape lag.

I was able to fix 17.4 last night. Pretty easy really "Uninstall", will continue to use 17.2 for now as it is working good here. A new user UI with crayola look alike Icons just don't get it for me if the graphics speed is sub par doing real work designing boards.

    All the best.
