Step models for PCB footprints

Carvey

Hello

We are considering adding 3D step models to our PCB footprints.

Where does one find these 3D models in order to do this?

I found a place on the web that has 3D models for download but they have a different file extension than .stp.

I downloaded one and tried to map to an existing PCB footprint but the step molel packager didn't see the model extension .skp that it was created in.

I know of a 3rd party software program avaliable to help do this but not everyone will be able to afford to purchase it.

Any ideas on how to accomplish this?

Thanks,

Carvey

    SKP is probably not a step file, these would typically be STP, or STEP, but there is no guarantee that the file extension is in anyway related to the actual file contents. Try 3D Content Central, or Grab CAD for STEP files - "other free download sites for STEP files are avaiable"!

     I downloaded a lot of models from 3D Content Central. You can also find some 3D models on mfg's website as well.

    But don't count on it being an easy task mapping the model to your footprint. This functionality in Allegro is still a work in progress. Most 3D models I have downloaded have the origin in some random spot so you have to "move/rotate the model mil by mil" untill it "appears" to be positioned properly. Or you can open the 3D model STEP file and manipulate the origin and rotation of the part to where you want it. And BTW - you probably won't be able to open the STEP file in your mechanical software either. I've been playing the blame game between Cadence and Solidworks tech support since last September.

     The mapping got improved in a hotfix to include mouse click and drag and increment moving which should help. The difficultly is users who design STEP models don't always use the same origins and ECAD users want so it's almost impossible to say it must match your origin. The mouse click and drag greatly reduces the positioning, you can then tweak the values to suit. If you do this is the symbol file then once it's done, it done.

    Is there a way to find out which footprint belongs to which step file....every now and then i experience this problem in Step mapping that a footprint is missing its allocated step file. And then it is difficult to find out the step model which was originally assigned to it.

    Ok, to find missing step files, you need to write a custom Report.  This ends up being saved as a *.txt file you may want to keep in a subdir from your company Allegro lib dir.

    To start:  these are the properties I will put in the custom report.   This shows when you start Editing Properties for the Drawing on a DRA file in Allegro.

    Symbol C:/svn/hardware/Libraries/AllegroFootprints/IND_Murata_LQW15A.dra
       DFA_DEV_CLASS = CHIP
       PKGDEF_STEP_FILE = IND-MURATA_LQW15A.step, 727672, 1564445470, 0, 0.000000, 0.000000, 0.000000, 1677451

    To put this in a report, >Tools >Report

    On the right, you see the save button. I have a shared directory with my allegro library for the <report>.txt files. But, if there's a config to set the path to these reports, I can't find it. Save the *.txt file that configures a custom report.

    Back in the Reports window, you have a Browse button on the UI to reload it in the future.
