Pan & Zoom Very Slow in Allegro 17.4 - HF005 & Prior Versions - Windows 10

Hi guys, I have an issue with Allegro 17.4 maybe someone can offer some help on this as it is rendering 17.4 unusable on my system.

The issue is when I zoom in and also pan to some degree, but it is really prevalent during zooming in on the canvas when a design is loaded.

Using my middle mouse button "Mouse Wheel" as I zoom in one mouse wheel click at a time, the windows 10 :Busy Icon" is popping up through each zoom step.

The Icon that pops up like in the picture below is just there for a second through each zoom step.

17.4 has been this way since I installed it.

On the same system I also have 17.2 HF065 (Exact same HW ) and there are no issues at all. Zoom & pan seem very fluid and fast as one would expect. Not as fast as 16.6 :) but still usable.

Has anyone seen this issue on 17.4 ?

One other thing somewhat related. When 17.4 was released there was an issue with the OpenGl rendering of :"NetNames" on clines. Basically if you zoomed in close to a cline the netname would become fuzzy. In HF-005 OF 17.4 Which I installed today this issue looks to be fixed. Netnames on clines are crisp just like in 17.2. Looking at the CCR for 17.4 there is no mention of this unless it is lumped into some other category ?.

I am running Win 10 ver is 1909 (Build 18363.752)

Thanks...

In case you need it, something to help with unusually large designs and graphics speed.

"Object filter" removes items from the graphics list by the size of all features.

If a via or etch segment is less than 4 pixels in size, it is removed from the graphics processor.

Thanks for the tip on the graphics filtering that looks to be handy.

I had run a bunch of tests using a special GPU utility that shows clock speed and pstates of the gpu while running allegro. It turned out to provide some very interesting info. Basically even on
large designs the open gl performance of allegro is really good. My video card was not even getting pushed. Like most of the time it sat at 250Mhz clock speed believe it or not. Doing a board render took the clock speed up to north of 1Ghz as one would expect because of the 3d objects but the 2d stuff is no issue.

On this start page thing it looks like when it is turned off in the user preferences it is still really on except it is made completely transparent. So in essence I am leaning to a compositing issue and that is what is slowing down the display. If you get a chance maybe you could confirm what I am seeing.

I never used eda artist sounds interesting. I am a long time P-CAD user and also Orcad Layout. I thought P-CAD Master Designer was great. The windows version was also pretty good but both pale in comparison to Allegro. Allegro is really great.

On router technology CCT Specctra I find the best part of it is not using the autoroute function but manual routing instead because of the speed. On dense boards and in particular routing on inner layers where there is no real package obstruction Specctra running it's autoroute can do a very good job. You have to tweek it with a do file but the results can be very good.

When it comes to straight autorouting the best router I think was "SmartRoute" by neuro cad. That router could put out quality routing that would rival even the best designers. They had smartroute in the Orcad layout tools as well as the maxroute which came from Masstech. Orcad acquired Massteck in the early 90's.

On PCB tools, Oh my the "VeriBest" remember that ?. That was seriously slick & expensive Slight smile

The new PC Hardware is great man. So fast it is just hard to believe.

    All the best.

CIS didn't change much in terms of version compatibility.  But, the HDL netlist interface for 17.4, the constraints file is now .xml format.  HDL is one way to 17.4.

Now that I've had my coffee.  Can't find deprecated/EOL software on the website.  Oh...

My install of 17.4 definitely has Specctra 17.4.  Start Menu>  Cadence 17.4>  Router>

    Hi RF.

Well if you are running Orcad-STD 17.4 here is what you will see. (Go to File Export Router) within Allegro to create a standard Specctra .dsn file of your allegro.brd

    It got Pulled :)

Now if you are on Orcad-Pro, there is no issue and everything works fine.

If you are running Orcad-16.6-std, Orcad-17.2-std the export to router functionality is included, it has always been included. The krux of the matter is if you are running 17.4 and on the orcad-std license of the tools you lost the ability to export your Allegro/Orcad .brd file to Specctra. So in order for anyone to pass a design file to someone that actively uses specctra to route a board you cant do that on 17.4 Orcad-Std.

In Orcad-std "File Import-Router" is still included so a user can pull in a .ses file but that's kind of useless because you wont have a board to update since you couldn't export the board to specctra to begin with.

Seriously this is not good. I was checking the last CCR and there were issues with Specctra.

1913829 SPECCTRA           LICENSING     Cannot run SPECCTRA with an OrCAD PCB Expert license
2212091 SPECCTRA           LICENSING     Include OrCAD PCB Router license for autorouting in OrCAD PCB Expert suite (PO9205)

I want this fixed that's all. It should have never made it out the door in 17.4 to begin with. Makes no sense when you consider the functionality has been included for a very long time in prior versions of the software.

    All the best.
