Simple things?

I am new to Allegro PCB with most of my experience being in the Protel design area.  A couple of very simple things to do in Protel seem to be impossible in Allegro (at least so far to me).  I could use some help with these:

1. Selecting a component in the PCB editor by refdes

2.  Actually getting the autoplacement to do anything

3.  Finding a "real life" design example in the tutorials and documentation

My main issue is #1, since I gave up on #2 and moved the parts manually.  I am surprised at the complexity of the user interface on this tool and was looking for a quick reference guide or similar.

One additional thing, any way to pan on the design window? Seems like a simple thing that I have not been able to accomplish.

To move by Refdes, Go into move mode (Shift+F7). Click the Find Tab then under "Find By Name" use the drop down and select "Symbol(or Pin)". Then type the refdes you want to move in the lower field. You can also use enable the Intertool Communication if you are using OrCad. Selecting a part in OrCAD highlights the part in Allegro.

To pan hold down the middle button.

Thanks, I fumbled through and found the select feature. The pan feature I would have never found.

Just for my information, is this documented anywhere?  I have found the help documentation to be very poor, even by Protel (Altium) standards, and that is pretty bad.  I like to the tool, but the user interface is easily the worst of all of the vendors I have used

So now that I can move the parts, I have found that all of the refdes text has been displaced.  What is the procedure for selecting the text of a component so that it can be moved with respect to the component.  Every time I try to select the text, the entire component is selected.

Use the Find Filter to select the items you wish to move.  If you want to reference designators, you will need to make sure Text is selected. Keep in mind that, if you have Symbols selected, you may find that the symbol moves AND NOT just the designator.  Adjust the Find Filter as you need it to do whatever it is that you want it to do.

If you want to find out more about Allegro, you may want to explore all of the menu items and see what you have available to you.  Allegro is feature rich and you may never get to the end of your exploration.  The combination of the Find Filter with ANY mode can do amazing things that you may not have had available to you in Protel.
