Why to use Allegro System Capture – Viewing and Editing a Hierarchical Block

A previous post covered importing and instantiating a hierarchical block in System Capture. This post looks at viewing and editing options of a hierarchical block.

Once the block is instantiated, it can be seen in the Project viewer. Click the block name in the Project viewer to see the underlying schematic sheets.

Schematic sheets for a block can be opened in two modes for editing:

  • Master Mode

To edit a block in master mode, open the schematic sheets of a block from the Blocks section in the Project viewer where each block and its contents are listed.

Changes in connectivity and visibility or formatting of objects are all master mode operations, and these changes are visible on all instances of the schematic sheet.

  • Occurrence Mode

The occurrence mode changes are not visible in other instances of the block because these changes are done only on opening the schematic sheet specific to a block instance.

The only change that can be done in the context of the root design is the change in properties. The property value that is same in master and occurrence is displayed in the same color. However, if the property has been modified in the occurrence mode, it appears in a different color, indicating that it is an occurrence property.
