OrCad 16.2 Demo in Windows 7 64-bit

I need to use OrCad for a class I am taking in school.  In the labs they have OrCad 16.0 Demo running on Windows XP.

I installed the OrCad 16.2 Demo on my computer at home which runs Windows 7 64-bit.  I have tried installing it twice.  The first time I just ran the setup file by double clicking it.  I had issues after installation so I uninstalled it and reinstalled it but the second time I right clicked the setup file and chose to "run as administrator".  This did not seem to make a difference.  I do not know much about the software but these are the issues I am having.

During the install the error in the attached picture was presented.

I also received an error when creating a new project in Orcad CIS Capture - I needed to run \pspiceexplorersrvr.exe /regserver   to resolve it.

I also received an error when attempting to create a new simulation in Pspice AD - I needed to run \pspice.exe /regserver, \simsrvr.exe /regserver, \simmgr.exe /regserver and mrksrvr.exe /regserver  to resolve this error.

but in Orcad CIS Capture there is not a Pspice dropdown menu as there is on the application at school, there is a Pspice toolbar but none of the buttons work, some are unavailable (grayed out) some are not grayed out.

I also do not seem to have the same "parts" available as I do at school or cannot find them, like VDC (DC voltage source) or R (resistors), the program will not allow me to add a library, when I click on the Place pull down menu and select part the vertical bar appears on the right of the screen but the "add library" button is unavailable (grayed out)

Any help would be appreciated, I also installed Orcad 16.2 demo on a computer running Windows XP and the Pspice menu is available but I am having the same issue with not being able to find "parts" and I cannot create a new simulation.

Thanks

Windows 7 is not a released operating system so it is not supported by the tools, also Windows 7 may not be supported for some time after the official release of the OS by Microsoft. It seems that Windows 7 will enforce many user account restrictions that have not been present in past Windows versions and that installers will need to be specifically written to support WIndows 7 - or whatever the commercial name becomes.

You should be able to use FIle>New>Project and specify a Analog / Mixed A/D project to get a PSpice simulation to run. You may find that libraries supplied with the Demo versions have restricted contents compared with the full product. Try running one of the sample projects in Capture Samples, like "example.opj", this should enable teh installation to be verified.

I accept that Windows 7 is unsupported.  So I will then focus on the installation I am running on a computer running Windows XP Professional.

At school is also installed OrCad 16.0 Demo.  So I would guess that with the 16.2 demo, which is what I have installed, the same libraries would be present.  However the below statement is true for the program running on my Windows XP computer also:

I also do not seem to have the same "parts" available as I do at school or cannot find them, like VDC (DC voltage source) or R (resistors), the program will not allow me to add a library, when I click on the Place pull down menu and select part the vertical bar appears on the right of the screen but the "add library" button is unavailable (grayed out).

I have chosen to start a New>Project and did specify an Analog/Mixed A/D project.  Yet I am still unable to add a library on the part selection menu.  Screenshot attached.

I have also tried opening the project I made at school and selecting all the "parts" on the schematic and copying/pasting them into a new project.  When I try to create a new simulation profile for this project I get the following error: "cannot initialize profile" .  I have attempted the following as suggested on an Orcad forum to resolve this issue but it did not resolve it:

"At the Setup Complete window choose whether or not to read the documentation and then click Finish. Now that you have successfully installed the software you will need to add System Variables. Go to:

Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> System -> Advanced -> Environment Variables

Check in the System Variable Area for the variables LM_LICENSE_FILE and CDS_LIC_FILE. If they do not exist create them by clicking on the New... button. Set each of these variables to the CDS_LICENSE_FILE value."

I have also tried adding parts using the tool bar buttons in the vertical menu on the right side of the screen.  However the VDC/Source or resistors are not available and I am not sure which library they are located in.

Again any help is appreciated, thank You.

I have figured out how to add the parts I was looking for VDC & R, I needed to put the part name in the "search for" box and choose the appropriate library path in the "path" box.  It is alot of trial and error but I eventually found the parts I needed.

I am still having the problem when attempting to create a new simulation profile using pspice though.  I even get an error when trying to open a sample file regarding the simulation file.  Screenshot attached.

I ran into the same problems as you ChrisHouse, I was able to contact EMA-EDA for support and here's what worked for me:

    1. Log on as an admin
    2. Open PSpice A/D
    3. Open Orcad Capture
    4. Open an example file or the file you're trying to open
    5. It should run properly, and all files should now run properly after this, even as a regular user.

If this doesn't work for you I don't have any other suggestions, besides contact support @ 585.334.6001 opt. 5

Thank You, that seems to have worked for me.  Having PSpice AD open before creating a simulation profile allows me to create and run the simulation.
