Training Insights – Electromagnetic Simulations Using the EMX Solver

10 Feb 2025 • 3 minute read

This one-day training course is an in-depth training on EMX Solver, a large-scale, full-wave, planar 3D electromagnetic simulator for designing and verifying Integrated Circuits (ICs). The EMX simulator is a powerful engine that simulates electromagnetic (EM) effects in circuits in a unified manner.

The course is characterized as follows:

  • This course will start by defining the EM Simulator, explaining basic EM Theory, describing EMX and its workings, comparing EM Simulation and Parasitic Extraction, and exploring the reasons why not to use built-in models. It will also involve comparing raw S-parameter results to a model created using EMX.
  • The next module takes you on a hands-on journey through the EMX Environment. You'll learn how to invoke EMX and navigate the config.il file, simulate the layout with EMX, and extract S-parameters for passive components like an inductor. We'll also delve into previewing the ports and geometries, identifying different device types, plotting the inductance and quality factor of an inductor, and creating the symbol and Sparam Cellviews.
  • The third module covers setting up the emxconfig.il file for ParaView, EMX's significant 3D visualization capability, analyzing current distribution in ParaView using current views and opacity, and interpreting different ParaView visualization functions.
  • The fourth module covers an essential and powerful aspect of the EMX software: excluding components from the EM analysis and simulating parts of a larger layout.
  • The final module discusses setting up multiple corner simulations using the case assistant and comparing their results.
