Training Insights – Virtuoso Spectre Transient Noise

19 Dec 2023 • 3 minute read

This two-day training course focuses on transient noise simulations using the Spectre simulator inside the Virtuoso Analog Design Environment (ADE) Suite. The course is characterized in the following modules:

  • Introduction to transient noise analysis: In this introductory module of the course, you explore topics such as transient analysis, different noise analyses in Spectre, and transient noise analysis. You'll also learn about the computational challenges, the transient noise algorithm, and the typical noise spectrum for a device. Additionally, this module includes in-depth explanations of various parameters used under the transient noise form.
  • Transient noise simulations: After the introductory module, you will learn about transient noise simulations. This module covers the definition of the Power Spectral Density (PSD) function and different methods of building this function. Next, the module covers transient noise analysis-based simulations by varying different parameters. Further, the simulations are covered for comparing the transient noise analysis results with the small-signal AC noise, periodic noise (pnoise), and harmonic balance noise (hbnoise).
  • Jitter analysis: The next module on the jitter analysis briefly introduces jitter and its different metrics. You'll learn about the various functions used for calculating jitter and how to compare the transient noise and periodic noise (pnoise) simulations for jitter measurements using different functions.
  • Using the multiple runs option in transient noise analysis: The final module on using the multiple runs option inside the transient noise analysis form starts with a brief definition of multiple runs. Next, you'll learn about the different functions used while post-processing the results after running the transient noise simulations (having the multiple runs option enabled). Finally, this module covers the simulations for comparing the transient noise analysis results (with the multiple runs option enabled) with the small-signal AC noise results.
