Virtuoso Video Diary: Do More With eyeHeightAtXY and eyeWidthAtXY Calculator Functions in Virtuoso Visualization and Analysis XL

17 Dec 2021 • 3 minute read

We live in a world where the idea of usability is to make products easy to use, make things easily accessible, and visually appealing. It's our constant endeavor to improve the usability of our products.

Eye height and eye width are amongst the most important amplitude and time measurements that circuit designers often perform on an eye diagram. You would agree that eyeHeightAtXY and eyeWidthAtXY functions have made these calculations quick and easy, ever since we introduced them in IC6.1.8 and ICADVM18.1 ISR4. With the latest IC6.1.8 and ICADVM20.1 ISR22 releases, you can do more with these functions. Sounds interesting? Read through this blog to know more.

Eye Height: Above and Below

eyeHeightAtXY

Consider an example of the eye diagram in which three different eye heights are shown: total eye height at point M, eye height above point M, and eye height below point M.

Earlier, with the eyeHeightAtXY function, you could only calculate the total eye height at the specified point in an eye diagram. Now, the eyeHeightAtXY function allows you to specify one more argument, Output, to choose from one of the three supported eye height calculations.

Valid values for the Output argument:

  • total: Calculates the total eye height at point M. This is the default value.
  • above: Calculates the eye height above point M.
  • below: Calculates the eye height below point M.

Eye Width: Left and Right

eyeWidthAtXY

Consider another example of the same eye diagram in which three different eye widths are shown: total eye width at point M, eye width to the left of point M, and eye width to the right of point M.

You can similarly calculate these eye widths by specifying one of the following values for the Output argument in the eyeWidthAtXY function:

  • total: Calculates the total eye width at point M. This is the default value.
  • left: Calculates the eye width to the left of point M.
  • right: Calculates the eye width to the right of point M.
