Cadence to Accelerate AI and Scientific Computing in Collaboration with NVIDIA

31 May 2024 • 3 minute read

In a rapidly evolving technological landscape, Cadence's collaboration with NVIDIA is driving innovation and progress across semiconductor design, automotive, robotics, and more. We are advancing the AI era by co-optimizing software and hardware to take full advantage of accelerated compute and AI so that we can enable engineers to tackle the great challenges facing society. This collaboration is poised to not only reduce the carbon footprint of AI data centers but also lead to advances in digital biology and drug discovery, setting new standards in the industry.

Cadence and NVIDIA collaboration

As part of his CadenceLIVE 2024 keynote, Cadence President and CEO Dr. Anirudh Devgan discussed Cadence's advances in AI. He stressed the need for a physics-based middle layer between the data intelligence (AI) layer and the accelerated compute (hardware) layer. It's this middle layer that has driven the historical advances in EDA and where Cadence can help deliver unique value. Modern accelerated compute now unlocks the ability for this physics-based simulation and optimization to generate large, accurate data sets to train new AI systems to help solve scientific challenges across domains.

The Power of Collaboration

Collaborations, such as with NVIDIA, expand Cadence's impact. Strategic collaborations in EDA, system design and analysis, digital biology, and AI have led to breakthroughs once considered unattainable. Here are some areas where our collaboration is making an impact:

  • The new Dynamic Duo III, the Palladium Z3 Emulation and Protium X3 FPGA Prototyping systems, offer increased capacity and scale, accommodating job sizes ranging from 16 million gates up to 48 billion gates. The systems are powered by the NVIDIA BlueField DPU and NVIDIA Quantum InfiniBand networking platform.
  • The integration of the Cadence Reality Digital Twin Platform and the NVIDIA Omniverse platform can virtually replicate the entire data center by harnessing the power of AI, high-performance computing (HPC), and physics-based simulations. This can improve data center energy efficiency by up to 30%, allowing existing data centers to be upgraded to handle AI workloads without requiring new ones to be constructed.
  • Cadence's cloud-native molecular design platform, Orion®, is now enhanced with the NVIDIA BioNeMo™ generative AI platform and NVIDIA microservices for drug discovery. This enhancement broadens therapeutic design capabilities and reduces the time needed to achieve reliable results.
  • Cadence has showcased AI advancements with products like Cadence Cerebrus, Verisium, and Optimality, which use reinforcement learning to improve optimization. The Cadence Innovus Implementation System and Cerebrus Intelligent Chip Explorer support AI-powered design for integrated circuits, including PPA, scheduling, and cost efficiency for NVIDIA GPUs.
  • Cadence's collaboration with NVIDIA extends to system design and analysis, including GPU-optimized Cadence Fidelity CFD Software and Cadence Millennium Enterprise Multiphysics Platform. With the Cadence Fidelity LES Solver and utilizing NVIDIA GPUs, the Millennium M1 achieves a tenfold increase in processing speed compared to traditional CPU-only systems, along with a 17-fold decrease in power consumption.

During an engaging fireside chat at CadenceLIVE Silicon Valley 2024, Cadence President and CEO Anirudh Devgan and Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of NVIDIA, discussed various topics, including the transformative role of artificial intelligence (AI), the evolution of computing architectures, and strategic insights into the future of digital biology and autonomous systems. Their dialogue outlined a roadmap for how their collaborative efforts could shape the future of technology. By harnessing NVIDIA AI, accelerated computing, and system design innovations, Cadence is well-positioned to drive transformative changes across numerous industries, from semiconductor design to autonomous systems and beyond.

A Collaboration for the Future

The collaboration between Cadence and NVIDIA is a testament to the transformative impact of technology—optimizing software and hardware, leveraging the power of accelerated computing and generative AI. Cadence will continue to shape the future of electronics, ensuring improved efficiency, sustainability, and groundbreaking advancements across various domains.
