EdgeQ: Building the World's First 5G Basestation on a Chip

8 Jun 2023 • 1 minute read

EdgeQ’s vision is to create big connections with a small chip. They’re looking to democratize 5G in an open paradigm, where their customers can access, customize, and deploy 5G purely through software. Their current mission is to accelerate cloud migration to the closest point of the edge where all data processing and connectivity occurs. To achieve this, they’re using Cadence tools.

A closeup of EdgeQ's chipEdgeQ is building a digital "Silk Road" with 5G, making them the backbone of wireless infrastructure for enterprises and telecommunication. To achieve this, they must design a chip packing the equivalent of 10 chipsets into a single elastic chip with 5G’s CPU, PU, and AI. Not to mention, this singular design must be software defined.

For designing a chip of this complexity, EdgeQ needs composable tools. Cadence Xcelium Logic Simulation offered them a modular yet integrated solution to their needs, while Cadence's Virtual Integrated Caomputer-Assisted Design (VCAD) Services gave them a cloud-based platform to accommodate global organizations. For their back-end tools, EdgeQ uses Cadence's Genus, Innovus, Tempus, Voltus, and Pegasus solutions, which are all integrated and can run on a single script. With the help of all of these tools, EdgeQ has made the world’s first 5G basestation on a chip, with more than 5 billion transistors.

“Designed with Cadence” is a series of videos showcasing creative products and technologies that are accelerating industry innovation using Cadence tools and solutions. Learn more about how EdgeQ is creating big connections with a small chip.
