Meet Cadence at Farnborough International Air Show 2024

22 Jul 2024 • 4 minute read

Since its debut in 1948, the Farnborough International Airshow (FIA) has stood out as a key event for the aerospace and defense sectors. Located in Farnborough, Hampshire, the show brings together the latest in both civilian and military aviation for potential buyers and investors to see. Through the years, it's served as the backdrop for the first public unveilings of many legendary aircraft, including the Vickers VC10, the Concorde, and the Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II.

The FIA serves as a valuable forum, offering an unparalleled opportunity to engage with prominent figures in the industry, gain insight into emerging developments, and experience impressive aerial demonstrations. With over 1,200 exhibitors and 74,000 trade visitors, this event is the premier convergence for the aerospace and defense sectors.

When: July 22 to July 26 at Farnborough, UK

This year, the FIA will emphasize six central themes. These themes are designed to help businesses network with their peers and explore new opportunities across various sectors:

  • Space: The event will spotlight the commercialization of space and new international spaceport infrastructure. Expect a Space Zone with global exhibitors showcasing innovative space-driven technologies, and a dedicated Space Theatre featuring key figures from the industry presenting pioneering content.
  • Defense: FIA 2024 will bring together defense companies and global decision-makers to showcase new technologies. It will include a Delegations Program for networking and business, as well as events celebrating aerospace and defense achievements.
  • Sustainability: Emphasizing the need to combat climate change is crucial for the aerospace sector, focusing on sustainability and Net Zero goals. This event attracts global leaders and pioneers in aviation, providing attendees with opportunities to participate in essential sustainability conversations and the importance of worldwide cooperation.
  • Innovation: Farnborough, known for its century-long impact on aviation, hosts the International Airshow. FIA 2024 will highlight new advancements, tackle industry challenges, and explore future trends, featuring exhibitors' latest innovations through displays and flight demos.
  • Future Flight: FIA 2024 and the Global Urban & Advanced Air Summit (GUAAS) 2024 will showcase the future of flight, including Advanced Air Mobility and technological advancements in R&D and manufacturing. GUAAS, happening on July 25, will bring together industry professionals, regulators, and enthusiasts to discuss sustainable and efficient flight solutions.
  • Workforce: The aerospace industry is experiencing rapid workforce changes. According to Gareth Rogers, Chief Executive of Farnborough International, there is an estimated shortage of over 173,000 professionals in the STEM sector. The "Pioneers of Tomorrow" event aims to inspire future generations and connect industry leaders with potential talent. It is open to all, regardless of age or background.

Transforming the Aerospace Industry with Cadence Products

Cadence products are transforming the aerospace industry in remarkable ways. The Cadence Fidelity Pointwise and Fidelity LES Solver are extensively used for aircraft and spacecraft design analysis. Further, the Cadence Millennium M1 software/hardware combined solution, the industry’s first CFD supercomputer, is capable of delivering up to 100 times the impact on design and offers near-linear scaling for aerospace and defense applications. This enables predictive CFD to run ahead of production testing. The system can conduct high-performance CFD design and optimize the process using GPU compute and modern CFD solvers. Customers have the option to deploy it on-premises or in the cloud, and it is compatible with GPUs from leading vendors.

In a recent discussion with Forbes, James Chew, Senior Global Group Director for Aerospace and Defense at Cadence, and Charlie Schadewitz, Vice President of Aerospace and Defense at Cadence, revealed a startling fact. In aerospace and defense, hardware-accurate digital twins are typically utilized after prototypes are built, in a reactive "fly-fix-fly" methodology. This contrasts with the tech industry, where such digital twins are used early in the design process.

Though simulation and digital twin technologies are less prevalent in aerospace and defense, they're proving valuable for efficient, timely product delivery in these and other sectors. Cadence's Palladium Z3 and Protium X3 platforms play a pivotal role in its suite for EDA and hardware simulation, aiding in chip debugging and prototyping. At an event in Santa Clara, California, Jensen Huang, CEO of NVIDIA, announcing the new Cadence systems, said, "Palladium is the only appliance that's more important to me than the refrigerator." He further mentioned, "It is the single most important appliance in my life. We are the largest installation of Palladium [platforms] anywhere."

Join Cadence on this remarkable journey and be part of shaping the future of the aerospace industry. We look forward to seeing you there and forging new connections that will shape the skies of tomorrow.
