Shinshu University Is Creating Voice Recognition Technology for Hands-Free Surgery

9 Feb 2023 • 1 minute read

The medical field is one that requires cleanliness at all times, especially when it comes to the operating room. But for techniques such as angiography, a type of X-ray done to check blood vessels, hands are usually required to browse and manipulate the images on the screen. For clean, hands-free use of such applications, Shinshu University has developed a voice recognition tool, and they’ve done so with the help of Cadence.

At Shinshu University’s Matsumoto Campus, medical students make full use of various technologies, such as computer science, and they’re looking for ways to improve the efficiency and accuracy of visual diagnosis and interactive voice response (IVR) treatment. Usually, when an operation needs to be carried out with cleanliness, oral instructions must be given to someone else or devices must be covered with clean vinyl. A situation that doesn't require hands has no risk of infection or contamination, making voice commands perfect for medical operations.

For their clinical needs, Shinshu University turned to Cadence, and usage of the Tensilica HiFi 4 DSP was proposed since the board supports voice recognition technology. In the future, Shinshu University would like to extend the technology to various human senses and perceptions and create a device that can be operated intuitively and universally in the medical field. For further development of their device, they’re looking forward to working together with Cadence.
