Damen Is Making Waves with Cadence CFD and Cloud Solutions

Damen is an international shipbuilding group with more than 50 shipyards in over 120 countries. While bare hull resistance simulations have been their bread and butter for a long time, they’re now looking at more complex simulations such as propulsion and maneuvering. With the help of Cadence’s CFD and cloud-based solutions, they’re now carrying out CFD simulations throughout the design workflow instead of just the late stages.

Previously, the Damen team had to spend a lot of time validating the model tests to capture the physics, but with Cadence CFD, they now know for sure that the physics are perfect. One of the challenges for the team is making sure that all the data talks to each other, and from there they want to build forward. When Damen's own automation infrastructure started to get out of date, they noticed Cadence has its own way of doing things, which was very appealing to them. Five different offices around the world are now using Cadence's cloud-based solution.

The next thing for Damen is validating to full-scale trials. There’s a lot of variability on them and the CFD is good, but the extra models provided by Cadence with roughness and wave making are helping them get closer and closer to real life.
