Honda Is Replacing Their Manual Meshing Processes with Cadence CFD

22 Dec 2022 • 1 minute read

When it comes to cars, motorcycles, and power equipment, Honda is a household name and is one of the world’s largest automobile manufacturers. A crucial phase in the development cycle for automobiles is the functional reassurance of engines, specifically, guaranteeing the heat resistance of certain parts and the cooling performance of the engine.

The amount of data needed to solve both external and internal vehicle flows is huge, and time is limited. In the case of Honda’s CR-V model, their challenge was creating full meshes for large complex geometries. Most importantly, they had to make it fast, and the meshes had to be of high quality. And here’s where Cadence CFD steps in.

Using OMNIS (now Fidelity CFD), Honda created a 200 million cell mesh, processed in parallel on eight cores. The advantage they got compared to other tools was a much higher level of automation for geometry clean-up and meshing, as well as better accuracy, robustness, and ease of use of the tools. A combination of AutoSeal and Hexpress tools allowed Honda to replace their previous manual processes effectively.

Honda’s Assistant Chief Engineer, Tetsuhiro Kawamura, expressed just how much they were gaining from the software: “Cadence NUMECA’s automation solutions resulted in faster processing speeds and more efficient parallel meshing, reducing pre-processing time for CHT simulation from more than three weeks to a day or two to cover the entire process.”
