Android, Linaro, and 10 Other Useful Embedded Linux Links

25 Oct 2010 • 1 minute read

The state of Minnesota is unofficially divided into two parts; The Cities and The Rest of the State. Of course, The Cities refers to the Twin Cities of St. Paul and Minneapolis. Outstate people from Grand Marias to New Ulm are happy to avoid the crowds of the city, but at the same time curious about the latest fads that are locally described as All the Rage in The Cities. Well, it seems Android has gained such popularity that it should now be labeled as All the Rage in The Cities by any Minnesotan interested in embedded software. If all this sounds a bit strange maybe it's time to watch the trailer for How to Talk Minnesotan and consider attending a show.

Yes, we hear a lot about Android so I encourage you to get the source and try it out. In the Cadence world we have also heard a lot about Linaro. Its probably too late to make it next week's Linaro Developer's Summit (LDS), but you can still attend remotely.

For all those that are interested in learning more about using Linux in embedded systems I highly recommend the training from Free Electrons. There is a ton of useful information available. A good place to start is the kernel training material. All of the material is freely available for download.

Truth be told, the majority of engineers working on embedded systems are probably not using Android or Linaro so here is a Top 10 list of other embedded Linux links. Many of these also lead to other interesting sitess.

  1. kernel.org, The home of the Linux kernel source code

  • BusyBox, the Swiss Army Knife of embedded Linux

  • U-Boot, the Universal Boot Loader

  • Openembedded, a  build framework for embedded Linux

  • Buildroot, another build framework for embedded Linux

  • Angstrom, an embedded Linux distribution

  • Debian, the Linux distribution ported to ARM processors

  • Emdebian, the Debian embedded Linux project

  • Embedded Linux Development Kit, a set of tools used to build embedded Linux systems

  • OMAPpedia, a community of resources for OMAP platforms

Feel free to share your favorite embedded Linux resources.
