AgigA Tech DDR3 memory module combines SDRAM and NAND Flash for data backup on one module

13 Aug 2010 • 1 minute read
AgigA Tech, a memory-module vendor and a subsidiary of Cypress Semiconductor, has added a DDR3 module to its family of high-speed, battery-free, non-volatile SDRAM systems. These new AGIGARAM modules combine DDR3 SDRAM with NAND Flash devices on one registered DIMM. All members in the AGIGARAM product family merge NAND Flash, DRAM, and ultracapacitor power storage to create highly reliable, non-volatile memory systems. The initial AGIGARAM DDR3 module has a 1Gbyte DRAM capacity and delivers data transfer speeds up to 1333 Mtransfers/sec. Larger DDR3 AGIGARAM modules are on the road map.

The AGIGARAM modules employ intelligent power management and a proprietary system controller to back up data stored in the associated DRAM when the host system detects an imminent power failure. During normal operation, the AGIGARAM DIMM appears to the system like a DDR3-registered DIMM. Should a power failure occur, the host system alerts the AGIGARAM module, which then takes control of the SDRAM and transfers its contents to the integrated NAND Flash memory, drawing on the stored energy in its ultracapacitor power source. When power is restored, the host system can tell the AGIGARAM module to transfer the contents back into the SDRAM and the host system can then resume normal operation starting from when the power failure was detected.

AgigA Tech will be exhibiting at next week’s Flash Memory Summit being held at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Santa Clara, CA from August 17 to 19. You can sign up for that event here: https://www.expotracshows.com/flashMemory/2010/
