Hynix initiates “20nm-class” NAND Flash production with 64Gbit devices

9 Aug 2010 • 1 minute read
Hynix announced yesterday that it has begun mass production of 64Gbit NAND Flash using “20nm-class” fabrication technology at its 300mm M11 fab at the company’s Cheongju site in central South Korea. The Company developed this manufacturing technology earlier this year and has been working with Israel-based Anobit, which is supplying expertise related to its Memory Signal Processing (MSP) technology. Anobit’s MSP is based on a set of proprietary algorithms that compensate for the physical limitations of NAND flash. The technology significantly improves the reliability and performance of NAND-based storage products and systems resulting in MLC NAND Flash memory systems with SLC-grade reliability and performance and 3-bit-per-cell NAND Flash memory systems with MLC-grade reliability and performance. As a result, NAND Flash devices based on Anobit’s MSP deliver more capacity at significantly less cost per bit. Coupled with Hynix’s 20nm-class fabrication, which doubles the bit density compared to NAND Flash devices fabricated with 30nm-class production technology, Hynix appears to be poised to make significant inroads into the cutting edge of the NAND Flash market in terms of capacity.

Note: The Flash Memory Summit takes place next week at the Santa Clara Convention Center, August 17-19. This event is the only conference in the world focused exclusively on Flash memory and its applications. An exhibits and open session admission ticket is free with registration. You can also pay a relatively low price to gain entry to various tutorials and forum sessions. (There’s also a Denali party to register for, read on...)

This year, the event includes:

  • Keynotes from Fusion-io's Steve Wozniak, IBM, Intel, SMART Modular, SanDisk, Dell, Samsung, Micron, and Seagate

  • Forums and tutorials on enterprise storage systems, architectures, caching, application integration, SSDs, embedded applications, and cloud computing

  • Special Plenary Session on Green Flash explains how flash can save energy in data centers

  • Market Research Session features top analysts

If that’s not sufficient, there’s also a pre-conference workshop on Flash security and a seminar on SSD fundamentals.
