INDILINX reveals use of its Barefoot SSD controller in HLDS’ HyDrive optical/solid-state hybrid drive

7 Jun 2010 • Less than one minute read
This blog has twice written up the newly announced HyDrive optical/solid-state hybrid drive from Hitachi-LG Data Storage (HLDS), which was formally announced last week at Computex in Taiwan. (See “More details on and system-design implications of the Hitachi-LG Data Storage HyDrive Optical/Solid-State Disk” and “How does a hybrid SSD/optical drive make sense?”) The HyDrive combines a Blu-ray/DVD burner optical disc with an SSD in one package. The two drives share a single SATA interface. INDILINX has now announced that its Barefoot SSD controller serves as the SSD controller in the HyDrive. INDILINX’ Web site says that the Barefoot SSD controller chip can handle SLC (single-level cell) NAND Flash and as much as 512 Gbytes of MLC (multi-level cell) NAND Flash.
