Cadence Cares Cork and Down Syndrome Cork Host “Exploring Careers in Technology”

21 Oct 2026 • 2 minute read

Written by Connie O'Shea, Cadence Cork

Cadence Cares is Cadence employees' way of giving back to their communities through volunteering, education, outreach, and charitable initiatives. In Cork, Ireland, Cadence Cares supports partnerships with organizations such as Down Syndrome Cork, helping to create opportunities for learning, workplace awareness, skills development, and inclusion. Through activities like site visits and mentoring, employees share their knowledge and inspire the next generation to explore careers in technology.

Down Syndrome Cork is a volunteer-led branch of Down Syndrome Ireland, dedicated to supporting people with Down syndrome and their families in living happy, healthy, and productive lives. Through its centres in Ballincollig, Curraheen, and its retail shop, the organization provides education, therapies, social and sporting activities, employment preparation, and workplace experience opportunities. Their Field of Dreams programme helps participants develop practical skills and confidence as they prepare for adulthood, and gives them the opportunity to achieve their full potential and enjoy a fulfilling life.

The day began with a hands-on introduction to programming using micro:bit devices, where participants created interactive hide-and-seek games and designed personalized digital name badges.

The group then explored the exciting world of robotics, programming small robotic cars to follow a dark line around a track. To add to the challenge, everyone worked together to design and create their own tracks using tape, and then racing the cars around these custom courses proved to be one of the most exciting parts of the day. There was plenty of enthusiasm, teamwork, creativity, and problem-solving throughout the activities, and fun was had by all. The activity provided a fun, hands-on introduction to programming, robotics, and problem-solving.

Following the workshop, the group enjoyed a tour of the Cadence Cork office, including a visit to the fourth floor, where they learned more about the innovative work carried out by our teams and experienced what it is like to work in a technology company. One of the highlights of the tour was a visit to the boardroom, where participants took part in a fun mock board meeting, stepping into the role of business leaders and decision-makers for the day.

The day concluded with the all-important pizza, giving everyone an opportunity to relax, chat with Cadence employees, and reflect on a fun, engaging, and inspiring visit. The combination of programming, robotics, teamwork, technology exploration, and a taste of workplace life ensured the day was both educational and enjoyable for everyone involved.

Find out how contributing to our communities is part of life at Cadence.
