Ascent: Training Insights: Smarter Design Reuse with Allegro X System Capture

28 Oct 2025 • 3 minute read

In today's fast-paced electronics industry, time-to-market is critical. Engineers face the constant challenge of delivering complex designs more quickly, with fewer errors, and under tighter constraints. This is where the concept of Design Reuse becomes a game-changer.

Imagine taking a perfectly crafted power supply, memory controller, or DSP block and dropping it into your next project—fully routed, constrained, and verified. That's the power of Design Reuse in Allegro X System Capture, a methodology that enables you to create, package, and reuse logical and physical design blocks across multiple projects.

Whether you're developing consumer electronics, automotive systems, or industrial controls, design reuse provides several advantages:

  • Reduces schematic entry and layout time
  • Minimizes design errors
  • Promotes modular and scalable design practices
  • Enables collaborative team workflows

What is Design Reuse?

Design reuse involves creating a standalone logical block and its corresponding physical layout, storing them in a library, and utilizing them across various designs. These blocks can be instantiated as components in a schematic and placed as grouped objects in PCB Editor.

For example:

  • A voltage regulator used across different product lines
  • A memory management unit used in every motherboard
  • A telecom port replicated 32, 64, or 128 times in a design

Design reuse isn’t just about saving time, it’s about building a foundation of proven, reliable IP that accelerates innovation.

The Design Reuse course helps you explore how engineers can leverage the Allegro X System Capture reuse methodology with real-world examples and practical workflows. The course is divided into clear, actionable modules.

The course is organized in the same order as the tasks performed for design reuse:

  1. Create a Reusable Block
  • Design the schematic in Allegro X System Capture
  • Define constraints
  • Package the design
  • Route the layout in PCB Editor and generate the physical module (.mdd file)
  1. Generate the Block Symbol
  • Use Tools - Generate View to create a symbol from the interface ports
  • Customize the symbol, as needed

  1. Reuse in Other Designs
  • Add the block symbol to a new top-level schematic

  • Place the physical module in PCB Editor using the $MODULEPATH variable

  1. Manage Changes
  • Modify the subdesign schematic or layout
  • Repackage and update the top-level design

In conclusion, Allegro X System Capture effectively saves time and reduces errors. Design reuse creates efficient workflows that help manage complex designs with greater reliability.
