Welcome to the System Analysis Knowledge Bytes Blog Series

28 Jul 2021 • 4 minute read

Electromechanical systems engineeringThe System Analysis Knowledge Bytes blog series will explore the capabilities and potential of the System Analysis tools offered by Cadence®. In addition to providing insight into the useful features and enhancements in this area, this series will aim to broadcast the views of different bloggers and experts, who will share their knowledge and experience on all things related to System Analysis.

We are happy to announce the launch of the System Analysis Knowledge Bytes blog series! The first blog in this series focusses on providing a high-level overview of the System Analysis solution offerings from Cadence. It also provides information about the type of content that you can expect to see in the forthcoming blogs.

The Challenge

Designing electronics to analyze the deluge of data presents challenges in the throughput, performance, and energy. Optimizing the performance while minimizing electromagnetic interference and radiation is a key challenge. Limitations of EMI and radiation signoff tools mean the whole system can't be analyzed in full system simulations. In addition, power and signal integrity issues in modern electronic systems may cause these systems to fail or become unreliable (the system may work but at slower speeds) or lower the yield drastically.

About System Analysis Solutions

The Cadence System Analysis solutions provide highly accurate electromagnetic extraction and simulation analysis to ensure your system works under wide-ranging operating conditions. They enable advanced multi-domain and multi-physics analysis using the latest leading-edge solvers to model, simulate, and analyze electromagnetics, electronics, thermal, and electromechanical effects on system-level designs. The Cadence System Analysis solutions offer the following advantages as compared to the other tools available in the market:

  • Scalability and Performance: Virtually unlimited scalability and up to 10X performance gain enabled by massively parallel execution, via the cloud or on premises.
  • Accuracy: Depiction of  the physical configuration of system designs using true 3D model extraction and simulation.
  • Risk Mitigation: Multi-domain analysis with minimal risk due to higher analysis coverage because of scalability and integration with the most industry-proven IC, package and PCB design environments.

The System Analysis solutions offering comprises the following:

Electromagnetic Solutions – Electromagnetic (EM) field solvers help you analyze the EM coupling effects, signal coupling, EMI/EMC, and simultaneous switching noise (SSN). Whether your design challenge is developing a chip, package, PCB, or the complete subsystem, Cadence offers the suitable technology to address your EM modeling challenges quickly and efficiently. The following figure shows the electromagnetic solution offering from Cadence:

Computational Fluid Dynamic Solutions – The computational fluid dynamics solutions from Cadence, the OmnisTM platform and the Pointwise mesh generator, address the high-growth CFD market segment where accuracy, reliability, and predictability are paramount concerns for high-fidelity modeling. Core competencies in CFD encompass industries like aerospace, automotive, industrial, and health systems with appropriate and specific solutions. These solutions range from Omnis solvers like density- and pressure-based solvers, automotive patch and aerodynamic mesh generation, turbomachinery solutions, and many more.

Thermal Solutions – Thermal solvers help predict the effect of temperature distribution on the design of integrated circuits (ICs), packages and PCBs, and systems. The following figure shows the thermal solutions offering from Cadence:

Signal and Power Integrity Solutions - The power integrity (PI) solutions, based on SigrityTM technology, provide signoff-level accuracy for AC and DC power analysis of PCBs and IC packages. The power-aware signal integrity (SI) tools provide signoff-level accurate SI analysis for PCBs and IC packages. The following figure shows the SI/PI integrity solutions offering from Cadence:

RF/Microwave Design Solutions - The RF/microwave design solutions from Cadence address the challenges posed by RF/microwave devices through RF-aware device models, electromagnetic (EM) analysis along with specialized circuit simulation technology, and design support aids. The following figure shows the RF/microwave design solutions offering from Cadence:

Cadence AWR Design Environment® Version 16 (V16) introduces groundbreaking cross-platform interoperability to support RF IP integration for heterogeneous technology development across Cadence Allegro® PCB Designer, Virtuoso® System Design, and Virtuoso RF Solution platforms, delivering up to a 50 percent reduction in the turnaround time compared to competing workflows. The V16 release also provides seamless integration with Cadence’s ClarityTM 3D Solver and CelsiusTM Thermal Solver, delivering unconstrained capacity for electrothermal performance analysis of large-scale and complex RF systems.

Note: For now, this blog series will mainly focus on Clarity 3D Solver, Celsius Thermal Solver, and Sigrity-related blog posts, but will cover an occasional update from other System Analysis solutions, such as CFD.

Hope you enjoyed reading about Cadence’s System Analysis solutions offering. We will aim to publish a blog every two weeks, so sit back, grab a coffee, and watch out this space to get your regular bite of System Analysis Knowledge Bytes. Happy reading!
