What is the best way to get layer info in top level view?

For example, I want the Metal layer info in top level view, now I have two ways to do it:

(1) run dbGetTrueOverlap and transform all the shapes to top level

(2) run diva to bring all the low level metal to top level.

I am wondering if any other ways to do it which may be better than these two ways...

Thanks for your help.

There are two ways to flatten all the shapes on a layer into the top level, use dbGetTrueOverlaps to find and transform the shapes or use a DRC to flatten the data and save it into the database. The latter is the most used method because it is usually faster, the calculations are executed in a compiled language rather than an interpreted one. Diva or any other DRC program will generate the layer with a hierarchical OR and output it to the top level.
