How to check if a variable exists (has been defined already)?

Searched the forum, couldn't find an answer.

In perl, one can do defined(var_name). Is there a way in skill?

Ultimate goal, I want a single bindkey (say CTRL-g) to toggle the grid in my AWD window. Since there is no function (that I know) to find out if the grid currently exists in this window, the only way I can do this is set a var to t the very first time I hit my bindkey and then keep using it to get the status and keep toggling it.

But, for this, I need to know if the variable has been defined already.

Thanks!
