how to convert a string to a list

hi
geGetInstHier( getCurrentWindow( ) ) command gives me the hierarchy of instance names. but it gives a string and i want to use instances separately. i think if i could convert it as a list, then i can separate the inst names.
what the command gives me is a string like this:
"/instname1/instname2"
so what i want is separate the string after every / sign.
thanks

    toto="/instname1/instname2"
    parseString(toto "/");=> ("instname1" "instname2")

    Warning, it results in a list, so multiple parseString not possible :

     parseString(parseString(toto "/") "n") ;=> error
