    Hi James

    We need more information.

What release are you using (via definitions changed from 5141 to 6.x)?

By playing do you mean you are editing or creating a path?

What tool are you using to play with the path? The interactive router? Interactive entry? Interactive editing?

What do you mean to grab the center of the contact of via? Do you want the via to be centered on the wires?

Thanks, I hope we can help.

I have not worked with 5141 in a long time so have forgotten most of the router but here are some general rules:

    1. Routers use the design rules from a techfile, either the Virtuoso techfile or one of their own. This sets the layers, widths, spacings and vias that the router uses.

    2. You can override the techfile values with your own values for the router by loading in a set of rules. You will have to look at the help document from your release to find how to override the rules.

    3. Vias are placed at the intersection of the centerlines of the paths. If the origin of the via in in its middle, the router can place it at the cross. If not, the router should have a way to specify an offset for the placement which will shift the origin off the crossing.

    4. In addition, the via placement is on a manufacturing grid.
