How to replace a string in a file?

Hi,

I need to search and replace a string in a file using SKILL.

I want to do this without creating any temp files i.e. open

file in I/O mode and make edits. I was able to this using

two files using something like the code below. Can somebody

suggest a more efficient way?

Thanks

Aman

infile(xx);

outfile(yy);

when( inPort

    while( gets( nextline inPort)

rexcompile();

rexReplace();

fprintf(yy);

close(yy);

    You can't open the file and modify it in place. You could of course read the entire contents into memory, do the substitution there, and then write out to the same file name. Whether that is efficient depends on the size of the file...

    Hi Andrew,

    Can you please elaborate the data structure I can use to store the entire file and then read back line-by-line to replace text?

    Thanks,

    Aman

    The simplest data format to use is a list, in your read loop add the current line to the beginning of the list using cons after changing the text in that string.

    Re-open the file for write then loop through the reverse of the list to print out the data.

    Then close your file.

    Thanks Ted - meant to reply but the last few weeks have been rather busy and travel-heavy, so I'm rather behind with Forum responses.  Andrew
