Does anybody know if there is way to route metal path between 2 pins(having same names) in a layout? My aim is develop a skill which will act like a autorouter. Thanks.

Prakash.

It is not a small project. For certain regular types of design, such as memories, it is do-able but still a large project.

What level of design will you be working at? If you are trying to route at the block level, it is much easier to use an existing router. You can control the existing router with SKILL.

If at the pcell level, you can create a router but you have to exercise great control over where the shapes are created. I've lately been advocating the creative use of modgen and its routers for complex pcells.

Assuming a 2.5 layer pcell router:

    1. You must leave open channels for the router.

    2. You have to determine where the bends are made. You can search by using dbGetNeighbor but that will slow the pcell down.

    3. You determine where vias are placed and how they are offset from the wire intersection.

    4. You must find the pins and then route from their edges.

    5. There are multiple routers, straight line, L shapes, Z shapes, with and without vias.

Thanks for the reply. My requirement is, I have floor planned design(includes both digital gates and pcells) and I want them to route using either skill or auto router. So I am exploring options to do it. Doing it manually would take lot of time. Regards,Prakash.

I would recommend an autorouter. Either something built into Virtuoso or dump LEF and DEF to use a digital tool.
