Getting information on cell instance

Hi,

Is there any quick way by which I can know which designs have an instance of a cell from my library.

For example:

There are n libraries, I have designed a cell 'X' in one of the library 'Y'. How can I know which all cellview in the 'n' libraries has an instance of 'X'

Thanks,

Shahbaz

There is no connection from a cell view master to the cells which place it so you have to search through all the cells in your libraries for instance headers which match the lib/cell/view.

The simplest method is to loop through the cells in your library

    1. Open each cellView Read Only.
    2. Search the instHeaders of the view for masters with the same lib/cell/view name (or lib/cell name). This is much faster than searching the instances because an IH can point to hundreds of instances.
    3. If the matching IH is found, you can get individual instance information directly from the IH.
    4. Record your findings.
    5. Close the cellView so you don't leave lots of open files.
    6. Do the next one till you run out of cellViews.

What about nested instances? Suppose I am searching for instances of a cellview 'X' of library 'Y' in another library 'Z'. I am following these steps: Step1: Get the list of all the libraries in the database Step2: Loop through the cells of each library Step3: For each cell find its instance headers Step4: If it matches with the required cell name, store its name and move on. The problem which I see here is: The cell may not have an instance of 'X' directly but it may have an instance 'P' which contains an instance of 'X'. What to do in this case?

Since you will be going through all the cellViews, eventually you will open "P" and you will find it. You are only searching the top level, you will be opening the lower level cellViews as you find them in the libraries.
