How can we hide ( make invisible ) an object in layout?

Usually in layouts we have text labels in every hierarchy of design.  When we are at top level,  all bottom level's text labels may be irrelevant to refer. Also, too many text labels from different hierarchy level create confusions.  Are we able to hide text labels  in given hierarchy?
