Renaming the names of the layers from an imported gds file in Cadence

Hi all,
I'm pretty new with Cadence and a have a problem I can't solve.

I have a gds file (which was created in a freeware tool) that I want to import in Cadence. Therefore I clicked on File > Import > Stream and chose the gds file as the "Stream File". No problems so far. But unfortunately the colors of layers are horrible and the layers are named with layer1, layer2 etc. So, how can I change the name and the color of the layers?

My first thought was to generate the layer map file, to rename the layers in that file and then to reimport that file. So, to create the layermap file, I clicked on File > Import > Stream. In the upcoming window i chose the gds file as the "Stream File" and checked the option "Generate Technology Information From Stream File". Now I got a .gds.tf.layermap file in which I edited the layer names. But how can I now reimport that file? Was it even the correct procedure to generate the layermap file? And is that a correct way to rename the layers? And how can I change the color of the layers?

Thank you for your help.

If you have an existing technology file for the process you're trying to use, it would just be a matter of using a layer map file to map the layer numbers (and datatype numbers) used in the stream (a.k.a GDS) file to the layer names in your technology.

If you're really starting from scratch, you can generate the technology file with stream in as you've done, but then you'd need to dump the resulting technology file from the library you create, and then rename the layers produced (keeping the same layer numbers) and probably altering the packet names used. The packets are defined in a display.drf file which controls the colours, line styles and fill patterns for each packet, and the tech file associates each layer-purpose with a packet to use to display it.

It's really hard to describe all of this without writing a complete tutorial on how to set up a technology file... so I'd suggest you contact customer support for more help. I'm sure a lot of this is in the documentation too...

    Regards,

    Andrew.
